To make a long story short…
We started our business with a logo and a website, but those things didn’t help us get any clients.
So we had to go back to the drawing board.
When we started, we wanted to be a boutique agency offering anything and everything to anyone. We had visions of designing wedding invitations, managing social media accounts, creating websites, etc.
But our message of trying to offer anything to anyone wasn’t very appealing or clear. Although we had taken about 6 months to design a beautiful logo and build a functional website… we weren’t getting any leads or clients.
We did a lot of research and what we found is that successful companies have extraordinary branding. When we say branding, we mean way more than a logo and some colours. We’re talking about a complete Brand Guide that helps you make business decisions and informed marketing strategies.
That's what we were missing.
We had a logo and a website, but we didn’t have a brand.
Huge lightbulb moment.
We spent another 6 months researching everything there is to do with branding. A lot of it we already knew, but we’d never put it together in a packaged way before.
We created step-by-step workbooks to identify our Ideal Client Avatar and how we wanted our brand to be expressed. Then, we both filled out those workbooks and had regular meetings with each other to discuss how we could bring both of our ideas into one brand. We also created simplified marketing plans informed by our branding so that we could market our business while leading busy lives.
The process was a little messy at first, but the results were extraordinary!
We got our first branding client through word-of-mouth and we decided to tighten up our process to test it. We wanted to create an extraordinary brand in 4-weeks.
Ambitious AF, but we weren’t afraid of a challenge.
Our first client signed up to work with us, went through our 4-week process and was absolutely amazed. She was so excited about what we created for her that she immediately signed on to do a second brand for her other business.
And that’s when everything clicked for us. Where Our Story Began.
We met at a marketing agency in Toronto.
Jessica had quickly worked her way up from Social Media Coordinator to Digital Marketing Manager running her own department.
She was helping the company hire a new Creative Director to manage that department because the company was struggling to find the right person for the role.
Norma interviewed for the role and blew everyone away. Everyone crossed their fingers that she wasn’t too good to be true, and they weren’t disappointed.
Norma took over the role of Creative Director with fierce confidence, outstanding organizational skills, and an incredible eye for design.
Norma’s design department and Jessica’s marketing department worked together a lot, so they got to know each other quickly.
Within about 3 months of working together, we went out for a coffee break and walked around the block. We started talking about what we liked and didn’t like about the company we were working for, our personal dreams, and this crazy idea that maybe someday we could work together at our own company.
Crazy, right?
Fast forward to Jessica moving on to a better paying job and Norma moving up the corporate ladder.
We kept in touch and started dreaming up ways that we could work together. It started out as a calendar, planner and notebook design company because we both loved organization, highlighters and any kind of paper goods.
We drew up product ideas, started identifying our ideal dream client, and it was all so lovely until we realized that we couldn’t work our full-time jobs and start this product company.
Norma was going to be a mom of 2, and Jessica was eager to adopt a dog. Both scenarios meant we couldn’t work 40-60 hour weeks, build our families, and build a product-based business.
It seemed like starting a business together wasn’t in the cards for us…
...until Jessica had lost her job.
She was part of a marketing team that was let go in an effort to cut costs. She texted Norma in a panic, telling her the devastating news and that she needed to start applying for jobs asap.
And then it hit us.
This was our chance.
The Universe was giving us a perfect storm, one where we would finally become biz besties!
So that’s what we did, we met for weeks trying to narrow down exactly what we wanted to do in our business and who we wanted to serve.
What a wild ride it’s been.
